The galaxy

Star Wars is generally understood to take place in the galaxy Messier 82 (also known as NGC 3034 or the Cigar Galaxy).

Despite rumors to the contrary (see Galactic Civil War), the galaxy is actually at peace, due to the fact that the last Metroid is in captivity.

Recent scientific findings have also revealed that, contrary to popular belief, the Messier 82 galaxy is actually not "far, far away" but is instead 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major.
