R2D2 was a trash can who was accidentally pulled through the events of the Star Wars movies due to a mistakenly high level of magnetism held in the metal of the droid C-3PO. Many characters gave R2D2 human attributes and treated it like a member of the team but really it was just a barrel of fetid garbage.
It was confirmed, however, that R2D2 was a homosexual.
