Since the Rebels are supposed to be the good guys, their superweapon must also seem gooder then the Death Star. Thus the idea of something to oppose the Empire's Death Star was thought up and the Life Star was born.
Whereas the Death Star destroys a planet using a powerful superlaser created by combining several "planetary proton beams", the Life Star creates a brand new planet via uses a powerful "Rainbow Beam" created by combined beams powered by "Love, Friendship, Tolerance, Self-Esteem, Caring for the Environment" which were generated by Ewok shamans dancing in a self-sustained butterfly matrix.
These brand new planets were designed to replace any planets destroyed by the Death Star as a way to counter it's actions and influence. The Life Star would follow around the Death Star re-creating planets it destroyed to counter it's military influence and utilize it's feel-good optomitic architecture to counteract the Death Star's terrifying influence.
The Life Star's primary defense was that since it was good, it would be thought to maybe develop a plot shield of some sorts and thus be immune to the Death Star. When Rebel leaders realized that this idea and the whole concept was completely retarded, they abandoned the project.
Over 5,000,000,000 Genonosian slaves died during the construction of the Life Star before construction was halted.
