Echo Base was originally a secret Rebellion shag carpeting storage facility located on the ice planet of Hoth. The Rebels moved here after Dash Rendar carpet-bombed the last Rebel base at Yavin 4 after a drunken bet with Han Solo. During BBY17 an Imperial Probe Droid landed on the planet looking for the Rebels. The ingenious Rebels wrapped themselves in shag carpet and pretended to be a primitive Wookie civilisation. The droid was fooled but what the rebels didn't know was that probe droids are huge racists. The probe droid slaughtered every single disguised rebel with its turbolaser cannon. The only citizen of Echo base to escape this genocide was Luuke Skywalker who fled to Dagobah and began an intensive breeding program with Yoda to repopulate the great galactic Rebellion.

Mechanical problems forced Dash Rendar down to the the surface of Hoth for urgent repairs. After fixing his malfunctioning fly, Dash Rendar ventured out of his ship the Outrider-64 for a quick look around. Upon returning to his ship he discovered that he had looked his keys inside, his droid Leebo was of no help as he had ripped it arms off and welded to the co-pilots chair after a drunken bet with Han-Solo. Dash Rendar built his ice castle on the ruins of Echo Base and later became known as Prince Xixor.
