Cliegg Lars is the stepfather of Anakin Skywalker. After the death of Anakin's mother Shmi Skywalker, Cliegg filed for custody of Anakin with the Intergalactic Familial Appeals Committee, but being only a poor moisture farmer with one leg, Cliegg could not afford a lawyer and was represented by his son's girlfriend, Beru. Beru, who would later marry Owen Lars, was studying to be a lawyer at the Tattoine Judicial Academy and was not officially licensed to practice law, on Tattoine or any system. Cliegg's claim of custody over Anakin was opposed by the Jedi Council and their team of high-priced lawyers. The Jedi retained custody of Anakin, and Cliegg, devastated by the defeat, sank into a deep depression. He spent his days drinking and gambling while Owen was left to tend to the moisture farm. After a significant loss at the pod race track, Cliegg attempted to escape his large debt to the Hutts but was tracked down by a bounty hunter and turned over to the gangster family that controlled Tattoine. Cliegg informed the Hutts that he had no intention of paying off the debt and was summarily executed by being cast into the Sarlacc Pit.
